The newest branch frond of Palms L.A. Kitchen and Bar had its opening party this weekend in the Sanyuanqiao area with lots of snacks and drinks, including a coconut soju cocktail that got a thumbs up from Linda B. Co-owner Michael Tsai says this place, sibling to the original Gulou establishment, is now open daily from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM and 5 PM to 10 PM. It’s just up the street from the original Home Plate restaurant which is just back of Xinyuan Road. Here’s the Chinese address:–朝阳区霞光里66号院远洋新干线D座102.

Sparkling wine took center stage on Saturday at the Conrad as the hotel held its first in a series of monthly tastings. Two dozen guests paid rmb150 each to sample eight different bubblies and enjoy a light buffet. The event, organized by the hotel’s wine director, Ashley Gao, included pours from China, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and New Zealand, including the new Chandon wine from the Ningxia region, which proved to be quite popular. The next tasting will focus on rose wines. More details to follow.

I mentioned last week that longstanding nightlife venue Alfa has been gutted. Turns out Alfa is simply going through renovations and will reopen under the same name. I’ll be getting more details later in the week.
