Sips & Bites | Arrow Factory about to open, plus TRB, TRB Bites & The Super Bowl

Look for Arrow Factory to open later this week in the former Vineyard Cafe space near Liangma River, says Will Yorke. The brewing will be done downstairs and the drinking done on the second floor, with seating for about 40 at the bar or tables, and the rooftop terrace. Expect a dozen beers on tap, including Two Birds Helles Lager, a tasty south German-style brew with mild flowery aromas and a slight sweetness. I was lucky enough to visit last night and try this one and a half-dozen others with Thomas Gaestadius of Arrow and fellow taster Mr Melon, including Guanxi Pale Ale, Pilgrim’s Progress Amber Ale and Heart of Darkness Belgian Bruin, and will have more on these soon. Arrow Factory will also have a simple food menu, featuring Stuff’d sausages, and be open for lunch and brunch. I’ll update here and on weixin — my ID is ‘beijingboyce’ — when the place officially opens.

Already well-known for delivering on dining value, TRB and TRB Bites are kicking off the year with even more in January and February. Get 20 percent off lunch and 16 percent off dinner by mentioning the code “2016” when asking for your bill. This special is available daily for the next six weeks except February 13 and 14. And, as lunch regulars know, you best plan a nap after a visit to either of these spots.

Paddy O’Shea’s, Q Mex, Cuju and Union Bar & Grille are among the venues that will show The Super Bowl this year. Given sports veterans like The Den and Tim’s Texas Bar-B-Q are either gone or expected to close for good before month’s end, some NFL fans will be seeking a new spot to enjoy their sport’s finale on the morning of February 8 — Beijing time — which also happens to be New Year’s Day in China. And there should plenty of fans about this year if the crowd that showed at 5 AM on Sunday morning at Paddy O’Shea’s to watch the Patriots-Chiefs and Seahawks-Cardinals — and to enjoy Dunkin’ Donuts — is any indication. (That extra-spicy Bloody Mary hit the spot!) More details on Super Bowl venues soon.
