UPDATE: Today is opening day for UMU Restaurant & Cafe in the Maggie’s Bar compound. (Maggie’s Bar is still there but temporarily closed.) Until July 11, spend more than rmb98 and get a free dish and drink. Here are some photos from UMU.

Changes are afoot at Maggie’s Bar, one of Beijing’s oldest nightlife brands, as UMU Restaurant & Cafe will open in part of that space this Friday. The sign for UMU–which apparently stands for You Makes Us–now adorns the main Maggie’s door at Ritan Park. Maggie’s moved to Ritan Park from Workers Stadium East ahead of the 2008 Olympics. Maggie’s Bar, including the live music stage, is currently closed at the moment due to the virus crisis, as are most Beijing bars, but staff expect to eventually get the green light to reopen.
Meanwhile, UMU has taken over the patio strip along the southern facade of the enclosed Maggie’s compound as well as a spacious back area. Customers can enter via the usual Maggie’s door or a new dedicated one off Guanghua Road.
Expect a menu of pastas, paellas, sausage platters and more, plus a lineup of house brews. I was told yesterday Maggies’ popular hot dogs will be available, too. Opening hours are from lunch until late.
This means another welcome stop for a drink or two on that long Guanghua Road stretch, along with Schindler’s Tankstelle, Fingerprint Cafe and the new Embassy Cafe.
