Slow Boat and Great Leap have collaborated on a commemorative beer to honor the memory of Sam Cornthwaite, the co-founder of Good Works who died of acute pancreatitis in Beijing in September. Good Works sources coffee beans from small farms in Yunnan, makes and sells its own roasts, and then uses the profits to train late-teen at-risk orphans for jobs such as baristas. When not putting his heart and soul into this project, Cornthwaite could often be found enjoying one of the city’s craft beers and was well-known to those in the scene.
Slow Boat’s Chandler Jurinka says a coffee called “Emperor’s Roast” was made specifically for the tribute beer. The coffee has roasted tobacco, chopped walnut and ashy elements, says Jurinka, who add adds the beer is dry hopped with Styrian General hops from Slovenia, to give it berry aromas, and uses lactose for a creamier latte flavor.
Jurinka says the commemorative beer should be ready for sale early next week at Slow Boat and Great Leap outlets, with rmb15 from each pour going to Good Works.
Grab a few pints for a good cause. You can further help by buying the Yunnan Imperial Stout by Jing-A, which also used Good Works coffee. It was created for this year’s Maovember campaign and rmb10 from every pour goes to Good Works.
