An early-evening cat nap seemed wise ahead of New Year’s Eve but the ensuing four-hour deep slumber meant waking just before eleven and rushing, somewhat dazed and confused, to Q Bar. Since 2004, I have kicked off the New Year by sharing at least one drink with Q co-owner George, whether here or at First Cafe, Midnight Cafe or George’s, and this was no exception. The only difference: I brought my own fruit, the lone one procured this year from my Meyer’s lemon tree, to use for the drinks.
Ever-consistent bartender Jacky made good use of it not only for our martinis but also for one of the better Sidecars I have tried. After midnight, former Q bartenders Wendy and Lulu showed up and made a few cocktails of their own, then it was off to Paddy O’Shea’s to see co-owner Paul, who’s just-one-more attitude meant we ended up feasting at Ping Wha, watching football at Home Plate and then having a quick coffee a new cafe Tiens Tiens before making it home just before noon.
All in all a pretty happy New Year’s Eve. Hope yours was fun, too!
