Huxley Yuan been running bars in Beijing for the better part of two decades, from his “Shut Up, Just Drink” joint near Houhai to hutong haunt Nian to former spots Tun and Houhai Zoo. Now he’s started dabbling in home brew and shared a couple of his works in progress at another one of his places, Nanjie in Sanlitun South, on Saturday night. We tried a lager and an ale and he added that he is also making a single-hop IPA. Hopefully, we’ll see some of these beers on the Nanjie menu in the next year or so.
Nanjie place doesn’t attract as much buzz as neighbors such as The Local, Q-Mex, Jing-A or Home Plate but it was packed on this night. And as better weather arrives, that balcony on the south and west sides of the building offers some prime people-watching opportunities, made even better when you’re guzzling one of the 500ml Samuel Smith beer options available at rmb50 per bottle.
