By Jim Boyce | The fifth annual Maovember charity campaign launches tonight at bar / restaurant XL—map here—from 5 PM to midnight. Drop by to get your 2017 pin, try our darts challenge, and enjoy food, drink and friendship. Also, ribs are half-price and happy hour goes until 9 PM! As an added bonus, XL’s Jane Cui will donate 20 percent of revenue from 5 PM to midnight to Maovember.
I’ve helped organize the annual Maovember campaign since 2013 and like the project because it brings together a mishmash of bars, restaurants and characters, features a month full of fun events, and supports good causes. This year’s charity partners are Bread of Life, a bakery that employs disabled orphans that are entering the work force, and The Library Project, which provides books and reading rooms to needy schools throughout China.
This campaign also features a ‘mao-a-thon’ quest by The Beijinger’s Mike Wester to walk 900-km in one month to raise money for Maovember. He plans to literally kick off that campaign by walking Beijing’s Third Ring Road today. He’ll also be at XL later tonight for the launch party.
And if last year’s party was any indication, tonight should be a lot of fun. Hope to see you there!
