By Jim Boyce | Some 200 people stopped by Bottle, Boot & Cigar a.k.a. BBC last night to say farewell to a bar that hit far above its weight—yes, I had to use a boxing reference given the BBC logo. There was also a crowd gathered outside Anchor Bar, just around the corner.
The demolition teams working through Sanlitun South over the past few months are expected to soon take down the strip that contains BBC although neighbor Frost remained open today, which means you still have time to try the totchos (tater tot nachos) and donkey pizza.
Anyway, when it first opened, I went to BBC two or three times per week to enjoy its intriguing spirits lineup. This place was also to first to carry a dizzying array of vermouths and it was fun to try those in various recipes, like the Alfonso Special shown below. Good memories. And good to hear that co-owner Doug Williams says there are plans to open a new BBC.
It’s also last call for Baozza in Sanlitun Soho. The FoodieTown outlet will serve its last baozi-pizza combo on Friday—try the Haiwaiian version if you haven’t already. Look for Baozza to re-open soon. The new place will be in the hutongs (Baozza will take over the kitchen of an existing venue), will include seating instead of only takeaway, will still do takeaway (soon) via Sherpa’s and have a menu that will feature new items, such as add-on toppings and the long-awaited dessert baozzas.
Finally, veteran establishment Fubar is drawing a crowd on Tuesday nights with its new weekly French Touch events, which involves a trio of French entities (see poster below). Last Thursday night, patrons enjoyed wine from rmb25, beer from rmb20 and hot dogs for rmb15 along with tunes from DJ Peter Stone.
