By Jim Boyce | Veteran Korean restaurant Saveurs deux Coree will soon give customers two reasons to visit: for traditional Korean food by day and for a smart lineup of drinks by night.

Saveurs de Coree has long been one of the best places for authentic Korean food—that bibimbap takes me back to the peninsula—whether at its current spot in Xiang’er Hutong or the former ones on Nanluguoxiang and in Ju’er Hutong.

Starting next week, the place will transform into a soju bar from 9 PM on a nightly basis. The drinks list includes sojus from both Koreas, a trio of beers (Hite, Cass and Max, all rmb39) and a half-dozen cocktails (from rmb39).

The Jeju Island Iced Tea sounds appealing, with a mix of cucumber, orange peel, barley soju, Coke and more. And yes, there is a cocktail with kimchi, one of the more challenging ingredients. Add some plum, rice and ginger wines and you have a nice range of options.

(I wonder if they can add the Kim Gin-Il Tonic we invented a few years ago with ginseng liqueur? Maybe not.)

Anyway, there are also a handful of snack options, including Korean fried chicken (rmb49) and seafood pancakes (rmb49). I’ll try to pop down there soon—I’m way overdue for a visit.

Saveurs de Coree is at 128-1 Xiang-er Hutong.
