Sips & bites | Vin Vie II, Cannon’s Burgers, Saveurs de Coree, Beer Mania & Beijing Beatles

Stuff happening in the Beijing food and drink scene:

Wine time | The second branch of wine joint / izakaya Vin Vie is open on Baijiuzhuang Street, just off Sanlitun South and close to Haidilao, and is it ever cozy. Most wines are rmb300 to rmb600, with China options like Domaine Chandon, Grace Vineyard and Tiansai from rmb280 to rmb350. Expect plenty of nibbles, including grilled shrimp, a bunch of edaname dishes, noodles, and Japanese-Western inspired treats, as well as nine sakes, mixed drinks and more.  I only had time to pop in and check the menu but, given the design and vibe, this will be a nice addition to the neighborhood. Will be back soon.

Beijinger magazine Burger Cup Galaxy Soho Beijing 2017

Boom! | Had this deep conversation with Will Cannon—Me: “Burgers?” Him: “Yeah.” There you have it, Cannon’s Burgers on Xingfucun Middle Road, in the same strip as O’Steak, is finally open, a status confirmed by a burger-munching buddy. Cannon’s double-cheese was my favorite at this year’s Beijinger Burger Cup. Speaking of which, one can now easily saunter from Great Leap to Cannon’s to XL to Slow Boat to Mex and thus hit many of the top burger joints in our city. Beijinger, organize a tour!

Saveurs de Coree Korean restaurant and soju bar

Aigo! | Sad news that Korean restaurant Saveuers de Coree will say goodbye on Sunday (today). It’s been a cozy and dependable spot for traditional Korean dishes and recently started transforming into a soju bar at night. Look for King-Tai and Eun Jung to be back in business soon!

Beard Mania | Thierry de Dobbeleer will leave our fair city in two weeks after a 16-year stint that included being boss of Beer Mania. Word is the new owner will keep a Belgian beer focus, and the new manager Brian is nice, but it will be weird to not see that beard, a 20,000-kuai beard, at that. His last official work day is August 31 but you’ll likely see him enjoying pints for another week or so.

Fab Four | I usually don’t write about bands but the Beijing Beatles are an exception, given how many times I have witnessed their performances and how much booze I have consumed with them. The band will play Q Bar on September 8. Hopefully, Q does a repeat of the John Lemon, Apple McCartney, Orange Harrison and Ringo Strawberry shots.
